“crawl” by jordan hunter
My exhibition details the artwork of four game cards for use in a tabletop role-playing game. The cards encompass the variables found within the game titled “Crawl”. First a player chooses a class card, such as “The Wizard”, in order to determine that player’s skills and abilities that take place on their respective turns. Next player’s work together or in competition to search and loot equipment cards to expand the player’s skills and possible actions, the “Bandit’s Backstabber” gives players the accessibility to eliminate enemy player’s through a deceptive trick. Next, player’s encounter event cards which change the game periodically adding new challenges for one or more players to overcome, the “Polymorph: Bighorn” card has the effect of changing strength based classes into that of an animal which severely limits the players capabilities and must be removed before said player can utilize core abilities for gameplay. Finally, combat is intended to be dynamic and enemies such as the “Twin Wyvern” card are introduced incrementally based on danger ratings, as players progress and defeat enemies the standard for encounter size increases forcing players to cooperate more effectively as the game evolves. The art style of the “Crawl” cards are based off of Wizards of the Coast early 1970’s Dungeons and Dragons tabletop games, as well as early prints from influential printmakers such as Albrecht Durer and Utagawa Kuniyoshi. Originally intended to be a woodblock print, recent difficulties forced an adaption to a digital format and so I was required to learn a plethora of new skills in order to replicate the design in Adobe programs. I’m quite happy with the result however the end result of each card is intended to be a proof of concept and prototypes of the card styles so each will be updated and refined in the coming future.
